Calendula – English Marigolds.

ShareItem (8)

A really old herb that is a Hardy Annual, this is a plant that will flower and go to seed in one growing season, you can normally sow straight outside in April. They work well as pot plants, or planted straight into the ground. They normally come in oranges and yellows. They work really well planted as a row within a vegetable patch and will help to attract hover fly who in turn will then eat your aphid and green fly. Both the flowers and leaves were turned into medicinal treatments. Primarily they were used for treating premenstrual strain paines hence the botanical name ‘Calendula’ taken from the word ‘calendar’ or in today’s terms ‘the time of the month’. The leaves are still used for treating skin problems . If you wish to purchase them they are hardened off and ready to plant you can purchase them from Oakdene Nurseries 2 varieties are avaialble, the ordinary upright version or a trailing variety suitable for  .

The Daffodil is the birthday flower of March. Thanks to the Romans we have them growing along our highways and byways but they planted them thinking they would heal cuts and wounds.
